Chapter Twenty-Four

Sally drove Chap home and escorted him directly to the bedroom. On the way, Chap looked longingly at the whisky bottle on the lounge room sideboard.

“You don’t need that,” Sally admonished. “You need sleep. Besides, you shouldn’t mix alcohol with painkillers.”

He leaned against her and clumsily attempted to nibble at her ear. “Would you like to know what I really need?”

Sally smiled. “You only think you need that. You are still suffering from shock.” She pushed him gently onto the edge of the bed and removed his damp shoes and socks, followed by the rest of his clothes.

Soon, he was naked between the sheets and he heard himself mumble something about how her naked body next to his would surely hasten his recovery. He thought he heard her laugh and then he was asleep.

Sally tucked the blankets tightly around his body and sat for a moment, listening to him snore softly. As she watched him sleep, her thoughts turned to her late husband. She was falling in love with Chapman Bouttell, she was certain of that now. It was a realisation that filled her with a strange, nostalgic sadness.

While Chap slept, Sally reluctantly returned to the restaurant. François was there, and although she knew he would never complain, she felt bad about leaving him to handle the security arrangements. She would check in on Chap later in the day.
